since my maltese lost 27 teeth at 4 years old due to periodontal disease i learned the hard way that teeth cleaning is very important in toy breeds - i waited too long and now she has 15 teeth. I used petzlife gel for a year thinking it would save her from having dental and i should have had teeth cleaning earlier. You have to get xrays just like we do and even more important as they have a smaller bone to tooth ratio than humans or big dogs so alot of the probs like abssess teeth, etc lie below the gum line and you cannot see this and it is hard to get below gum line on a non-anesthetic cleaning. We see a board certified dentist it is a little more expensive but i think worth it as most vets have their techs do the cleaning
