Default How do I know when he has to go?

I'm potty training Ruger with pretty good success. I've been taking him out on a schedule, and using a crate when I can't watch him and at night.

Only once has he stood at the door and whined, but I have caught him just hanging out at the front door and looking at me. This seems to be a sign, as he happily goes out if I take him.

Anyway, during this process will he eventually whine or something to let me know he has to go out? I can't be watching him every second, so there has to be a way to get him to signal me and I'm hoping it just comes naturally.
