He may also be using the full frame camera. The D90 has the 1.5 crop factor. A 35mm lens is equivalent to a 50mm lens. A 50mm lens is 75mm. This relates to field of view. The D90 makes things smaller, like cropping.

This is a good option too - Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens
