anal glands Hi, I am a certified professional groomer and it sounds to me like you have one that is not emptying his own anal glands. I have to empty about half of my yorkies anal glands and most on the small dogs I groom. Yes! It can cause problems and can get impacted! You do not often see anal gland problems on large dogs because the size of the stools. When they go, it emptys the anal glands on the way out. Unfortunately that is not true with small dogs. I empty anal glands on all small dogs I groom unless they do not easily release. If they do not, I fill out a vet ref card and have them take them to their vet. Not easily releasing usually means they are impacted. If you force them, you can actually blow holes in them which require surgery. You can take him to your vet and have your vet show you how, or to a good (trained) professional groomer. Make sure the groomer is schooled as there are a lot of self taught ones out there. I do mine everytime I bath them. Another sign of full glands is dragging of the butt. Ricki
