It is very difficult to get the mats out and can be painful for the dog... you may want to consider having him shaved down and starting over. He will be cute either way and the upkeep will be easier if you start fresh.
If that is not an option, use a detangler spray and move slowly through him holding your finger between the knot and his skin and using a slicker brush on the mat.
