For a while I was just using 4 panels because of the limited space and I mostly used to keep him safe from my roomie's super mean dog. I had his food, water, and reasonably sized bed in there and a few of his toys; that was his safe place when I wasn't home. I eventually used all 6 panels, and made a rectangle with it so I included a doggie tent instead of the bed so he could cuddle up and hide with his chew in there, a piddle pad, food, water and some toys. He still had plenty of room to walk and I knew he and his chews were safe. He never tried to jump, so that was never an issue for us.
The only reason I stopped using it was because we moved in with my parents and he's the only dog here. No more needing to keep him safe away from a mean dog.

Edited to add that this one is 30 inches tall.

I ordered this one this morning. I have hardwood floors also, so I hope it works. After comparing many different places that carry it, I ended up with the best deal at Home Depot. I spend a good share of the day, cleaning up after 5 puppies -- so I'll be very glad when this gets here.
