Honestly, go with what is most comfortable for you and your furbaby. Not that I recommend this in any way, but I use it without that orange thing. I first cut my boy's nails down and I just use to to make sure his nails aren't scratchy. I go up, down, and I do the sides too. I never could get it to work with that orange "protection" thing on top. Kaji fidgeted more that way. Whatever you do, keep the hair back, otherwise you will end up with broken hair on his/her paws.
