My experience has always been that you can't let a dog who's not fully trained roam free in the house unless very carefully supervised. Crate or at least confine her to a limited (preferably non-carpeted area) when you can't give her your full attention. It's a lot easier to put the time in up front and get your dog trained than to try and correct mistakes after they've happened. Once the scent gets in anything- your carpet, etc.- it's natural for them to want to return to it.
