Sounds like anal glands. Watch the vet do it, and look for the signs in a couple of weeks or a month, it could be a one-time thing, but some dogs have reoccurring problems. We added fiber to the diet and Joey doesn't have the problem anymore, I don't know if the fiber was what did it, or he outgrew it.
