Congratulations on the new puppy, I can't answer your question, but it sounds like they are having fun together. I don't think a dog rolling on his back means he's giving up his dominance; I think it just means "you are not a threat". Does he always go ballistic when you pick up the puppy? I take care of my sons' dogs, and one of the goes ballistic when I pick up Joey, he's gradually gotten over it, and he's younger than Joey. Joey doesn't seem to mind when I pick up other dogs. Maybe if you could pick up Maximo first, he'd get over you picking up Teddy.
