my Tiggy will be 8 years old next month. When he wants to be held, he will stand up and bark to get my attention. When I reach down to pick him up, he automatically turns around and will growl. I'm wondering if they just feel more secure being picked up that way and not frontwards?

btw, I got Tiggy from an abusive family when he was 3 years old, thank God! The mother worked all the time, the dad for some reason hated him & abused him terribly. he never learned to play with toys & still wont to this day, he was locked in his crate & only let out once a day to potty, had been kicked down stairs, etc, was terrified of men/boys but fell in love with my hubby pretty fast and the ONLY thing he had been taught was to growl. most times its really cute but can be annoying sometimes lol
