When we travel and can't take them with (rare, but has happened), we ask a trusted friend to house-sit. We stock up the fridge and freezer and numbers to our vet and the emergency vet as well as directions. I also make sure they know feeding instructions, etc. (they humor me and pretend to listen, but I write it down just in case)
and off we go. We do give the friend some cash (1/2 before we leave and 1/2 when we get home), but that may be something optional.
