For some reason I have always said to Darwin "up, up, pup, pup" since he was very young and he always wants to come up right away. I have seen him back away from someone when they've just gone straight away to pick him up. Maybe they're just "proper" pups and expect us to have manners; you know, ask permission before being picked up, hmmm, glad I chew with my mouth closed!
