I know you wrote that you have signed up for classes -- another great resource is "The Missing Manual" available at Amazon -- there are versions for OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard, depending on which one you have. The books contains all of the essentials as well as advanced tips and tricks. Best of all, the book is the best written, well-arranged computer book I have ever read.
