ZZ has really long nails, and I trim them best I can. Her quik is long as well, so I took her to petsmart today to see what they thought to do about them. The lady came out with her clippers and said "You cut the nail all the way back in the quik to make it desired length, it will heal!"

I jerked ZZ up off the counter so quick, I was so apalled?!?!? Do they really do that?!?!?!?! My vet says you can only trim past a certain point and they will be damaged and make their feet hurt, which makes more sense to me.

I screamed at the lady and told her to never touch my dog again. The manager caught me going out the door but I was in such a horrid mood after that I ignored him.

Has anyone else ever heard of this?!

Sorry to be so rancid, I was angry!
Actually the groomer is correct, and if she knows how to do it, it doesn't even hurt. I had to see this with my own eyes before I believed it. I was using the Pedi-paws, and Joey's nails got too long. I took Joey back to his breeder for a grooming, and she said the nails were way too long. She said nails should never touch the floor and if you keep them too long, the foot will spread. Also, as you said, the quick grows too long. She was able to cut them back, and some bled, but Joey didn't make a peep. She said the trick is to hold the nail firmly when cutting, it's the wiggle of the nail bed that causes the pain, also the clippers must be very sharp. I wouldn't let just anyone do this, I was sweating bullets when she did it, but I saw it and I believe it's possible. Let me just add, she was able to get him to relax on his back while laying in her lap, he seemed very calm the whole time, even when she was dipping the paws in septic powder. If you don't have confidence in the groomer, you can also have her cut it back a little and then go back each week for cutting a little more, but it might take a whole month to get them the proper length, and there might be some point she will have to cut into the quick. Anyway, I know how you feel.
