Welcome to the South Suburban Humane Society --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Puppy Mill Raid-Rural KankaKee 50+ dogs taken from alleged puppy mill Comments February 12, 2010 SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE One women is charged and a second faces charges after police raided a suspected puppy mill and rescued 53 designer lapdogs confined in below-freezing conditions and suffering a variety of health problems. Authorities rescued the dogs Friday at a trailer park near St. Anne, in rural Kankakee County, the Cook County sheriff's office said. Barking sounds led officials to a shed on the property, where they found 30 puppies some with broken bones, internal organ problems and infections of fleas and mites confined in below-freezing conditions, the sheriff's office said. Officers found 23 more designer dogs in a second shed. The dogs multi-poos, Yorkshire terriers, pugs and other lap dogs ranging in age from seven weeks to 10 years were being sold online and through newspapers between $300 and $600, the sheriff's office said. The raid was the result of a weeklong undercover investigation initiated after employees of the South Suburban Human Society in Chicago Heights tipped off authorities. The target of the investigation is a 59-year-old Joliet woman, who was not home at the time of the raid and will be charged with felony cruelty charges early next week in Kankakee County, the sheriff's office said. She has previously faced similar misdemeanor charges, but no warrant has yet been issued in this case. Another woman, Karen Brownfield, 57, was charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals, the sheriff's office said. Brownfield is related to the Joliet woman and was renting the home where the dogs were found. She will appear in Kankakee County Court next week. All 53 dogs were taken to the South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights, where they are being treated, the sheriff's office said. Illinois State Police and the Cook County Sheriff's Animal Crimes Unit handled the searches outside the county because of the need to quickly get the animals out of their environment, the sheriff's office said. |
