While I was there speaking to a woman, she had a stunning puppy but she said she may not reach size to continue showing.. I thought this meant 4 pounds?
So my question is when breeding show quality dogs would your goal be to bread dogs reaching weight between 4 and 7 pounds?
Or can you have a dog in the ring under 4 pounds? |
I would never breed a girl under 5 pounds (I prefer my girls between 6 & 7 pounds). However, there are other factors that fit into the equation. Does she come from a long line of free whelpers, bone structure (smaller boned seem to have more problems when whelping), having her reproductive organs examined to make sure that there is plenty of room for her to carry pups to term, can carry a large litter (more than 3).
You can Champion a smaller boy much easier than a smaller girl. Always remembering that the purpose of showing is to gain approval of your breeding stock.
If you get to New York......you will see that most of the dogs are not on the small size, very much the contrary....
