I happen to think that the "All American" or mixed breed dog makes the perfect pet and there is definitely value in breeding them. All breeds were developed by mixing 2, 3 or 4 purebreds together...it is how we got yorkies n fact.

I happen to respect the breeders who breed these combinations as they are just as reputable in my book as the Purebred breeders and simply realize the possible benefit of mixing breeds to a new and uniques combination.

You will find many morkies, yorkteases, malti-poos, yorkie-chis, etc on this forum and they are wonderful pets. The truth is that there are not many small breed dogs to be found in the shelters because they are in demand and, if and when they do show up in a shelter they find homes very quickly.

Some of the cutest dogs I have ever seen were mixes and most vets will tell you that the mixed dog is generally healthier than the purebred dog.
I disagree. The yorkie breed didn't appear overnight from mixing 2-4 things together. There is a standard, and it took a long time to develop. These new mixes don't have that standard. You don't know what to look out for health wise. On some you don't know if it's ears are supposed to stand or whatever.
I feel like people aren't seeing the big picture. There are tons of small dogs in the shelters/foster care right now, especially after the hurricanes. I have seen purebred maltese and yorkies end up in the shelters even before then. The number one designer mutt is the labordoodle, which isn't a small one. I care about animals regardless of their size. Of course this trend will hurt the larger dog population worse.
I feel like byb's might start to focus on this trend or breed their poodle to all the dogs in the neighborhood to make some extra cash. No longer will they have to search for the perfect poodle mate. No one can argue that the pet population isn't crazy right now with tons of dogs being put down. I'm predicting that allot of people aren't going to want these designer mutts when they grow out of the puppy stage and there will be a huge surge in the pet population.
I believe the entire point of a purebred is predictability. You never know what you'll get. I want to know how many times I should be taking her to the groomer, if she likes kids, watch dog, guard dog, etc. Someone said their dorkie (dachshund/yorkie) breeder said they were great because it wasn't a barker and didn't have back problems from being a dachshund. Well what if you end up with a barker with back problems?
I don't mind the accidental mating. I believe that if a person wants a mix, the first place they should stop is the shelter and see which ones they have there, you could get lucky. But to bring more of them into this world I feel is a mistake. In small towns where I'm from allot of small dogs are still in shelters. I feel like this just hurts their chances or adds to them later. Don't get me wrong, the puppies are cute, but if you're interested, just try and visit a shelter first.
I enjoy our debates Socal. I look forward to meeting you
