being in a new home can be quite scary and stressful for any dog...also you mention that he came from an abusive home and that can also play a factor...

as far as housetraining....if he came from an abusive home...i wouldn't take the previous owner word on him being housetrained...he was probably left in a crate or cage all day or for the most of it...i dunno i cant really say....

it is going to take some time and patience but i believe you can get through the housetraining problem with consistency.

as far as not being able to keep food down...and his size (not sure how big or small he is) i would keep some nutrical on hand in case of the sugar level dropping to low which can be deadly...

where is his bed? maybe try putting a tshirt or your socks that you wore that day in with him at night...your smell can be confronting for him....
