I have an Andis clipper with the attachable blades. It is single speed and the steel teeth are adjustable. I use the 1 inch blade for a puppy cut and mine also includes a blending blade....which is very nice and avoids a choppy appearance.

Keep in mind...the way you hold it in your hand affects the cut and the pressure you use does also. So if you set it down and pick it up...or switch hands...you aren't necessarily holding it identically as you did before

It takes some practice before you get it down pat.
