With all due respect to the people who say to go to the shelter and give a mutt a home, I have yet to find a small breed dog in any of the shelters near us. In fact, I typically look at the humane society listings every couple of days at least, and rarely is there anything less than 20 pounds- mostly large mixes in the 40-80 pound range or more.
I've also been looking at the rescue sights, but the fact of the matter is that I don't have the kind of money to really help some of those dogs in the way they need to be helped in most cases, as sad as it is. Yes, I can help by donating money, but not the kind of money that will pay medical bills for life on these rescues which is what they need and deserve with as hard a life as most of them have had.
We have a yorkie-poo, and bought her from a reputable person, and are quite happy with her. I definitely don't support the "designer dog" hype where people charge outrageous prices for the supposedly rare or trendy mixes, but we didn't pay an outrageous price at all and didn't buy her because it was trendy. Simply put, she's exactly what we were looking for and we knew we could give her a good home.
In my opinion, and it's just that, make sure you find a reputable person who isn't selling dogs to cash in or isn't a puppy mill/pet store breeder, and you should be happy and satisfied with your little one. |
