I certainly do not think it is rude, depending upon how you ask the question. You could even query what experience they have with small dogs, specifically this breed. Find out what they like most about grooming small dogs, what they like least? What is the most difficult circumstance they've encountered, and how did they handle it? IMO you need to develop a comfort level with their competence.

When Remy is groomed, I am actually with him the entire time. As he is being trimmed Hannah will literally ask me - do you want this off, how short do you want this area? He is never out of my sight, he never waits in a cage. These were all requirements when I chose my groomer.
