I housesit for a woman with a yorkie that has a child's playpen for her pup right next to her bed. She has a bed in one end and a pee pad in the other end. The puppy can see her in bed all night long which is really comforting.

During the day, she throws a couple of toys in there while she's at work and leaves the TV on and her little furbaby never seems to have any separation anxiety.

I think the playpen is a great substitution for the exercise pen if you have a carpeted home! If they miss the pee pad, it's not such a huge deal in a playpen! You can usually wash the pads at the bottom of the playpen to get rid of the odor.
