Agree with what the other posters have mentioned including dogs can hide their pain very well (part of survival in the wild) and yearly (or more if affordable) blood work to catch any values that might be getting out of range. When I took Zack and Zeke in for their annuals (they are 4 and 3) I mentioned that Zack was drinking more water than the other two and I had a concern. Good news was the blood work was very good with no high or even moderately high values. Vet suggested to keep an eye on him tho since drinking too much water can change eletrolytes(sp) etc. Having had to lay two yorkies (13 and 7 1/2) to rest jan 08 due to kidney problems I may be too cautious but the kids are worth it.
