I got my sheltie at 1.5 years old and his name was "Anchor" because he has an anchor shape on his forhead. I really didnt like the name and didnt think it fit him well so I changed it to Toby.. he was coming to it in about 3 days. So I think your pup would be fine if you changed his name.
Alot of rescues change the animals name, to single a start to a new life..
