I am a breeder but I do not show my dogs, nor do I breed more than a few times a year.. But I put almost every dime back into my dogs as well. My vet is also pretty pricey but I trust him and have known him for 17 years. But I also started using an older country vet who is pretty awesome and will let you watch while he does surgeries and such. My regular vet, Coe charges 300.00 for fixing a cherry eye. This vet charged me 50.00 and he did an awesome job.
I have only had 3 cherry eye pups in 20 years, I know a show breeder who uses my vet who I got a cocker from yearsss ago and she has so many cherry eyes being fixed all I have to say is cherry eye lady and the girls in the office ALL know who I am talking about.
And BTW, Missy (the cocker) had to be PTS at age 6 because she became paralyzed and had other health issues. I HATE this breeder, she is very well known and the things I saw at her place made me sick! ok thats another subject I suppose, but I miss that dog still after 9 years.
Her daughter died at 14 months from liver failure and I got Hanna, my heart was so broken. then Missy was gone when Hanna was about a year. I have not gotten another cocker since. Just FYI I was required to breed Missy 2x and she was to get half the litters. It was a co-ownership and I was an idiot for agreeing.. however I didn't know better at the time.. Well thats another subject I guess and it's a very long one to boot! but she is still breeding! Once I was there and she had 45 puppies.
Yes there is ways to make money on dogs, sometimes I do make enough to pay a bill but that is about it. I have an account just for my dogs, all puppy money goes into that and then all vet bills, testing, food, etc comes out of that money. I absolutely ADORE my dogs, and all dogs. And I love breeding.
The ones making big bucks is the commercial kennels and yes I am totally against them!! I am not against people using kennels except for the toy breeds like yorkies and chihuahua's and other little dogs.
But The kennels should be state of the art, warm, cool, and no more then 50 dogs. Like I said before here in WA state no breeder can have more than 50 dogs. Including commercial breeders..Boy are they ticked off. I see no reason for any more than 50 breeding dogs.
Also, I have noticed lately that almost all pet stores here have quit selling purebreds and are selling mixed breeds only. And I mean really stupid mixes. And sad to say, most are pretty ugly.. but they sell like hotcakes to lumberjacks!
Ok, shutting up now because I completely forgot what I was talking about in the first place..LOL
Picture is of Missy and Hanna when she was a baby
