First, rule out pain. Second, nip this in the butt NOW! You do not want a dog growling at you for petting/touching/etc. My dad's Jack Russell mix is like this and it is so not cool. You can go and pet her and if she's not in the mood... she will show her teeth and/or growl at you. I immediately will tell her "no growl!" and continue to pet her. She's not in pain, she's just a little spoiled brat, LOL. You don't want your dog to be like my dad's dog because she's bitten a few times and left a pretty big mark on me.
