My little Rowdy has a bit of a sensitive GI tract and he gets diarrhea off and on - my vet lets me treat it myself (within parameters, e.g., he's eating, not lethargic) UNLESS there is blood in the poop, then I have to bring him in right away.
So, I'm glad you are taking him to the vet. Mine give Rowdy a shot and it clears everything up in a few hours.
