We don't have matts, just the occasional tangle after playing rough on carpet, etc. As you suggested, I always use fingers to detangle first, then carefully work with a comb. I would never use a slicker -- I don't like them.
Several show people here have written that they don't brush too much between baths so as not to overwork the coat. I have to brush Maximo daily because he is a rough and tumble boy, and his grandpa always makes a mess of him.

I don't think some people have a choice as far as the slicker. It's all relative to what you have, you're expectations & weighting out the benefits of removing nasty mats on some. It's all relative to ones coat.
We brush after baths. Some people just enjoy brushing and/or grooming their pet.



I can't imagine spraying any product on them daily. You may consider an Anti-Stat or
Daily Brushing if you are looking for something without buildup.
I wouldn't put anything on mine daily. Even when you dilute them greatly they are still "products".
