Yeah I prefer this combo.
Lewie (male) was very dependent as a pup, but being with Manolo (female) made him more independent because Manolo is very adventurous and loves to explore too. She's always been the independent type. But at the end of the day she comes and cuddles which is always great. Lewie is more dependent and would rather be with his mommie than eat. But he'll always go his own ways. It's really awesome to have both traits in dogs.
