Get a harness instead of a collar. That way, the pressure is not on his neck when the dog pulls.

I'm sort of a do-as-I-say, not-as-I-do person, though. I use a collar because that's what they recommend in obedience. But I'm as careful as I can be and try not to let him pull at the leash.
