My Maddie does better if I wash her face and then use a comb to comb out the wet hair. I think their faces are just more sensitive, like ours. If you're old enough to have ever had to pluck a dark colored hair from above your lip, you can imagine what it is like for them when it pulls.
Also, the black, thicker "whiskers" are probably sensitive as well.
