Once a sire is used 3 times the AKC will send a letter to the sire owner that a DNA test will be required before the next litter can be registered. A breeder should know well in advance about this. The DNA kit, I think, is $40 or a little cheaper if bought from the AKC store. The breeder can go ahead and register the litter and as soon as the DNA kit is received the AKC will mail the litter registration papers to the breeder. A breeder does not have to wait for the actual DNA certificate to be issued before sending in the litter registration.
