Using Cosequin in dogs with grade 1 LP's sure can't hurt.
I hope the OP has her Yorkie's knees evaluated by her vet, though, instead of just diagnosing him herself. I do get concerned that Cosequin is recommended here for LP's so frequently. I just hope that people understand it can't fix a structural problem and is not a substitute for your vet's treatment recommendation. |
I should make it clear that I'm not using Cosequin, I'm using glycoflex II, which also contains Glucosamine because that's what Joey's breeder recommended, I think mainly because her dogs would eat it without any problem, and Joey's a fussy eater too. I don't know much about LP, but I thought in grade one. the bone slips out of the socket, and pops back in by itself, I was guessing that by building cartilage and connective tissue, it might keep the joint from slipping. Obviously, in the higher grades where joints don't even fit socket, it wouldn't do much good. I thoroughly agree it's recommended way too much, and I read one thread where a breeder was thinking about putting it in her nursery packages.
From my own personal experience with Glucosamine, I was taking it for arthritis for several years and had great results, but I switched brands, and the new brand wreaked havoc on my stomach, and I stopped taking any. My joint pains came back with a vengeance, so I started taken it again. You don't get results overnight, it's not a pain medication, it took 3 weeks before there was any improvement at all, and the process has been very slow, but it definitely helping.
I'm so glad Lady is doing better, arthritis is so painful, and of course the pain keeps you from wanting to move the joints, which worsens the condition.
