Bandit does something similar, he'll hop up on the back of the couch when we come home (if he's out of his crate) and to bark and greet us. He'll go down when we say down, but we don't know how to get him to not do it in the first place either. I know they have some kind of static mats for furniture so animals don't get on it when you're not home, but I don't know if I'd feel comfortable doing that.
