Hmm, someone with more experience and knowledge than I have is going to have to give you more ideas.

As for cleaning up accidents, many people are posting about white vinegar/water solution being better than Nature's Miracle at eliminating smell and stains so that the dog doesn't return to the same spot -- depends on what kind of material your area rugs are made of -- do a small spot test first. A good carpet cleaning machine is a pricey but a worthwhile investment. I bought one after my little nephews visited this year and tracked mud through the house.
