I used poochie bells, but you can make a ribbon with the big bells on it in different places. I can hear them all over the house. Perhaps I'm just tuned into them and listen without thinking about it.
When I started, I would take Kacee's foot or nose and ring the bells and ask her if she wanted to go pee. Then I would take her out. I would praise her royally after she went and then I'd give her a piece of cheese as a reward. I started her out on them as soon as I got her and she picked it up in a few weeks. She went through a puppy phase of ringing them for all kinds of reasons - ringing them all of the time. Even to get me to come play with her!
I'm glad I stuck it out, because it has been wonderful. She only rings them to go potty.
