I live in a 780 sq ft apartment, and Couver does great here I just make sure he goes on lots of long walks daily.

As for the second dog, I would also recommend that you wait until you are not working such long shifts... 8-12 hours is a long time, and to introduce a new dog to that routine right away would be difficult.

As for the kitchen, I have heard of dogs chewing on cupboards, so if you do not want to worry about that, I would recommend an x-pen in the kitchen.

Apartment living is great, as long as you make sure she gets lots of attention when you get home and she is walked plenty.
