I used to go to a veterinary clinic that was bought out by VCA, but like you said, they are REALLY expensive. My husband is in a club with another guy who is a vet (way across town, so we can't use him), and he says that VCA is way over priced. I did like the vets there a lot -- they seemed very competent -- but it was always like they were trying to "upsell" after they became part of VCA and they charged such high prices.

The last time I took my 2 dogs there for a yearly check-up, it was over $800! That was for the exam, shots, 6 month of Sentinel, etc, and special blood tests that they recommended for my dogs just because "they were seniors." The dogs were not having any symptoms of any kind, and the blood tests turned out normal, but that is the last time I am going to get talked into anything like that.

I now go to a vet clinic that is much more reasonable. They charge $29.50 for an office visit. They try to minimize costs, and even have a bulletin board where they post websites that have the best prices on heartworm/flea meds. They don't have the bells and whistles that VCA has, but they are great for maintenance of a healthy pet. I'm sure if I have complicated problems, I would go see a specialist anyway.
