frequent flyer My Edie is a frequent flyer. You must use a carrier that is airline approved. If you use a hard crate, it must fit under the seat, so you might need to ask for the dimensions. If you use a soft carrier (like the sherpa bag) you can make it fit under the seat. The purse-like bags that do not close up completely are not allowed.
The dog must be able to stand up and turn around in the carrier. I have never had anyone check for this, but if your dog cannot do this, he/she will probably be very uncomfortable in the carrier because it is too small.
Usually, only 1 dog is allowed in the cabin, so make your reservations early. If one person has 2 dogs, they will allow you to bring 2 dogs.
Fees vary. I recently paid $80 for Edie--each way. She was billed as "excess baggage" on my Visa card.
Although health certificates are required, I have never had any airline ask for one. So now I just go to the vet and get a printout of Edie's innnoculation history and when she is due for her shots. I hate paying for extra checkups just to get a certificate to fly.
Remember, you are supposed to leave the dog carrier under the seat at all times, and the dog is never supposed to be out of the carrier. I DO break this rule now and then. Somehow, it seems crazy to me to have screaming babies in the cabin (who are on for FREE) while I must pay $80 for my quiet baby to be under the seat. I let Edie out, wrap her in my coat, and hold her close. No one ever sees her and she is happier.
I don't drug Edie. I do take her outside if we are making a connection. It is somewhat of a hassle, because we have to go back through security.
