I hate to keep repeating what everyone else has said but I do feel badly for you. My blood pressure was rising as I read your story. While I normally don't fear too many dogs - there is just something about our little furry babies that trigger other dogs - I think it's their size (NOT that yours did - just in general). Anyway, after watching a u-tube video of a dog attack, on a dog beach, in CA my husband and I decided to get a zapper. We bought it at our local indoor flea market and carry it on walks. We made sure that it had enough power to take down 150 pounds. I hope I never have to use it but if that's what it takes... Hope your babies are ok and that they don't have problems from this.
