Maybe he heard noises outside and bark to warn you guys.. I know we have a train that is very far away but if Bailey hears it she use to bark..because they are dogs and thats what they do. Maybe leave the radio on to cover all the outside sounds. There is nothing wrong with cratting at night not everyone wants a furry friend in their bed and people want the puppy to have limits and respect their stuff.
Also maybe he is not so tired and needs more play time before bed to exhaust him?
