I have found the name of a person through AKC in Northern VA - so do I just email her and tell her I am looking for a puppy? Would you suggest that I do a lot of looking and visiting before I buy? Or is it about seeing the Mom and Dad and reserving a puppy? I've seen a couple of breeders on here that have some beautiful dogs they breed but I don't want to travel across the US to get one and I certainly wouldn't want to have a baby shipped all alone. Please advise.

Impossible not to fall in love with all the baby puppies. However, yes to all your questions.

Check out several breeders, develop a relationship with your breeder. You buy your breeder first. Your breeder will be available to you 7x24. Seeing mom and dad will not guarantee you what your pup will look like as an adult. Your concern is more with the health and welfare of the pup. You are wise not to want a pup shipped to you.....you want to see that pup and meet the breeder first hand. Trust your breeder too, she/he will attempt the match you and the pup (personality wise).

While AKC is the registry most desired. Just because a breeder has AKC pups, it does not make them reputable.....

Check out YTCA.org breeder referral page
