Pistol is a mess maker.
He would take a mouth full of kibble and bring it from the kitchen into the living room, drop it on the carpet and eat it. I thought it might be the tile floor. I put down a throw rug under his bowl, it is large enough for him to stand on and eat. He takes a mouthful of food out of the bowl drops it in the throw rug and eats it. It's a quirk of his and I live with it. I just dump off the rug in the trash every night before i go to bed. It works for us. Maybe it could work for you too.
