Welcome to YT.
Unfortunately, the best thing is time. You need to get him use to the crate gradually. Never force him in it. You might start by doing what you've been doing. Leaving the door open with toys and a bed. You might want to also drape a blanket over the outside so only the front shows. This will make it feel more like a den. When he is going in there on his own often, then feed him in there with the door open. Do this several times so he feels like it's his domain and his only. Eventually, while he's eating, close the door, but open it when he's done. After a while, start keeping him in there a few minutes longer. Eventually, leave the room for a few minutes. Make the time longer and longer gradually. You don't want to use the crate as a punishment if you're trying to get him use to it. Also, I think with male dogs if you have them neutered it cuts down on the marking, but this is between you and him.
I wish you luck and hang in there. We are here for you both. |
