Default Grates - healthy fear or problem phobia?

Frisco is spooked by air vents and sewer grates. I have teased him a bit and challenged him to get familiar with them, but today we went for a bike ride and he totally hit the brakes when I was going to ride by a noisy sewer.

So we sat by it talking about sewers for a bit, and then went around more wider, ok, but I'm not sure how you end up with a balanced reasonable healthy respect for sewers out of an initial phobia, and I'm not sure if he should jump up on the grassy byway to go around or stay with me on the pavement side, going wider around.

What I'm trying to say is I don't want to eliminate the fear totally, just enable Frisco to handle it a bit more casually and reasonably. Because the sewer grates here are enough for him to break a leg in or fall right through. So he should go around, even if he sees me go ON it. Will that work? Does he know my feet/wheels are a different size than his?
