I only have Chuchi on a collar and let him of the leash as soon as we get to the park near the house and although he runs around a bit he never strays too far from me. If he does I just say his name so that he can hear it (without telling him to come) and walk the opposite way. Seems to work for Chuchi and gives him the freedom to explore the park and trees within reason
