they have a tool to polish while under and many do not hand scrape as takes too much time they use ultrasonic to blast off tarter and keep dog under less time. Then they polish with a tool. The non-anesthetic use a sanded polish that they rub over the teeth - brushing is most important as we do not scale our own teeth so i would not do it with a dog
