Could be he didn't recognize it as "his grass". It sounds funny, but we have a larger dog as well. When we go camping for the weekend sometimes it takes her from Friday when we get there until Sunday morning to do #2. Then we get home and it looks like we're housing and elephant.
He should hopefully adjust in a few days. Otherwise I would have to say call the vet.
