Where does the puppy coat go? How does it transition from puppy coat to adult coat? I mean, do you have to cut off the ends to get rid of the puppy coat, or do the ends also change to an adult coat?

Sorry if its a silly question, just trying to deal with the puppy to adult coat mats and am just wondering if you have to cut the puppy coat off anyway, I might as well do it now, but otherwise I will stick it out because I want long coats.
